How does Dominion define advanced power flow control (APFC) devices, and how do these relate to other technologies such as Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices or series compensators?
Dominion Energy continues to engage with technology vendors and research organizations to better understand emerging transmission technologies, including advanced power flow control (APFC) devices.
At a high level, APFC devices are generally understood to include technologies that can actively manage power flows on the system. These may overlap with other categories, such as Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, depending on their functionality. Many of these technologies provide multiple benefits—for example, enabling improved power flow control while also supporting system reliability needs.
As a result, the Company does not rely on a single rigid definition, but instead considers the specific capabilities and applications of each technology when evaluating its potential role on the system.
