What are the key safety concerns related to SMRs, and which safety, environmental, or regulatory requirements have been reduced or modified to support their deployment?
Advanced reactor designs use smaller cores, passive cooling through natural circulation and convection, and in some cases accident-tolerant fuels that greatly enhance safety. These features eliminate the need for many powered safety systems and reduce the risk of overheating, allowing the reactor to remain in a safe condition with little or no operator intervention.
